Volunteers Invited to Help Restore Natural Area in Allamakee County
DECORAH — Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation (INHF) invites the public to join a volunteer stewardship event just outside Decorah on Saturday, May 3, with opportunities to participate from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and/or 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
This annual event, Into the Wild, Out with the Mustard, offers a hands-on way to help protect and restore Heritage Valley — a 1,190-acre landscape of oak-hickory woodlands, goat prairies, limestone outcrops, and three miles of the scenic Upper Iowa River. INHF has owned and cared for Heritage Valley since 2007, actively working to restore and steward its diverse habitats.
Volunteers will help remove garlic mustard, one of Iowa’s most aggressive invasive plants, by hand-pulling it from the woodland floor. The task is easy and family-friendly, making it an ideal activity for volunteers of all ages and experience levels. Youth and families can also enjoy additional nature-themed activities including bird watching, sensory exploration, and magnifying tools for up-close discovery. Lunch will be provided.
No prior experience is needed. Guidance and gloves will be provided. New and returning volunteers are encouraged to join, including families and groups.
