Decorah Human Powered Trails, Decorah Rotary Club, Luther College Cross Country, and Decorah Parks and Recreation completed work on a safer trail for residents and visitors to explore the iconic Decorah landmark in October.
(Decorah, IA) – On Thursday, May 28, at 5:30 PM, Decorah Rotary Club’s After Hours Meeting will include a hike of Decorah’s Newest Trail, The Rotary Trail, located at Dunning’s Springs. The public is welcome to join the event, and can expect brief announcements, a bit of information about the trail, and a short hike to the top to view beautiful panoramic views of Decorah.
“This trail was a need identified by Decorah Human Powered Trails president, Nick Perch, who noticed that many visitors seemed to get stuck after scrambling up the rugged, eroded trail to get to the top of Ice Cave Park, and were unable to safely descend the trail. The new Rotary Trail allows a more accessible route to see the top of the ice cave park and view of Decorah that is welcoming to visitors and locals alike,” said Melissa Fuhrmann, who will be leading the hike.
Decorah Rotary Club contributed half the funding for the new trail and secured a district grant from Rotary District 5070 to match. Decorah Human Powered Trails set up multiple work days this fall, with members of Luther College’s Cross Country Teams, Decorah Rotary Club, DHPT, Decorah Parks and Recreation, and the community joining together for work days to help create the trail.
This program is appropriate for most fitness levels and family friendly; those unable to hike are invited to join and relax at the bridge and spring. Attendees should park in the lot next to the river and walk the short distance to the bottom of the waterfall to meet the group. Organizers advise guests to bring appropriate shoes and a water bottle.
