Mayor Declares May as WalkBike Month in Decorah
Decorah, IA —
The City of Decorah is preparing to celebrate WalkBike Month this May, following a proclamation by the Mayor recognizing the community’s ongoing commitment to health, safety, sustainability, and strong community connections.
Decorah is recognized as one of the most walkable and bikeable towns in the Midwest. With a strong foundation of trails, sidewalks, bike routes, schools, parks, a vibrant downtown, and Luther College—a Silver‑level Bicycle Friendly University—active transportation is both practical and enjoyable. Even those who live outside of town can often park once and walk or bike between destinations, supporting downtown businesses and enhancing overall quality of life.
WalkBike Month builds on this foundation by encouraging walking and biking as everyday transportation choices. Throughout May, Upper Explorerland’s Safe Routes to School and community partners will support a variety of WalkBike projects and events:
- WalkBike to School Day — May 6

Part of a national celebration led by the League of American Bicyclists, promoting active transportation for commuting. - WalkBike Pizza & Play — May 16 | 5:30–7:00 PM

Bike safety courses during P.E. for 3rd and 4th graders, annual in‑class instruction for 2nd graders, and no‑cost helmets for students who need them. - Transportation Safety Videos

Helping community members see how close destinations really are by foot or bike. - WalkBike Bingo!

WalkBike Month is made possible through collaboration among the City of Decorah, Decorah Park & Recreation, Decorah Police Department, Decorah Public Library, Decorah Schools, Decorah Sustainability Commission, Luther College Bike Council, Strong Towns, Winneshiek County Recycling, and the Winneshiek Energy District.
As summer construction season begins, WalkBike Month also highlights the value of choosing walking or biking when possible, to help reduce traffic congestion. Everyone—especially drivers—are encouraged to slow down, watch for people walking and biking, and use extra caution in construction zones and detour areas.
By declaring and celebrating WalkBike Month, Decorah continues to lead by example—recognizing both its strengths and opportunities while investing in a healthier, safer, and more connected community.
